Many of Ibiza's most beautiful coves have no road all the way down. The last stretch is a dirt track with loose stones, ruts and the odd steep drop, which is exactly where an ordinary hire car has to stop. With 4x4 car hire in Ibiza you can get to the bottom, and back up again without drama.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Sahara: proper four-wheel drive

Both Wranglers have real four-wheel drive, generous ground clearance and the confidence of an old-school off-roader. The Wrangler Rubicon is the most capable, with low-range gearing: the one to rent if your plans include the roughest tracks, such as the way down to Cala Llentrisca or the paths out to Punta Galera. The Wrangler Sahara leans more towards beach days: just as able on the island's dirt roads, with a removable roof and doors for driving in the open air.

Both seat five and have 272 hp, so they are no slouches on tarmac either.

Driving a 4x4 rental on Ibiza's dirt tracks

Take it slowly, especially downhill, and watch for loose stones on the bends. Only park where it is allowed: many coves are protected areas and some restrict car access in summer. If you are unsure about a track, ask us. We know the island well.

Can I reach the coves along dirt tracks?

Yes, that is what they are for. Both Jeep Wranglers have four-wheel drive and good ground clearance, and the Rubicon adds low-range gearing for the steepest climbs and descents. Many of the most beautiful coves, especially in the north and on the west coast, are reached along dirt and loose-stone tracks. Take it slowly, particularly on the bends, and only park where it is allowed.

What is the difference between the Wrangler Rubicon and the Sahara?

The Rubicon is the most capable off-road: it has low-range gearing and is designed for difficult tracks. The Sahara is geared more towards open-air driving, with a more comfortable cabin for everyday use. Both share a 272 hp engine, four-wheel drive, five seats and a removable roof and doors. If you will mostly stick to roads and coves with easy access, the Sahara is more than enough.

Are there coves you cannot drive down to?

Yes. Many of Ibiza's coves are protected areas and, in high season, some limit or regulate car access to avoid overcrowding. Before heading down a track, check that driving is allowed and only park in permitted spots. If you are unsure about a particular area, ask us: we know the island well.

Will you deliver the 4x4 to a countryside villa?
